Using Bryn Mawr’s Guest Wireless Network — Limitations and Permitted Protocols

Posted June 13th, 2012 at 4:07 pm.

The unsecured Guest wireless network is provided for the convenience of guests to the College and can be used by community members for those few devices which are not compatible with the security of the eduroam secured network.  This courtesy network is designed, because of its open nature and for the security of the College and other users, to be limited in function — not all network functions are available .

Traffic on Guest wireless is limited to the following Internet protocols and services:

  • HTTP & HTTPS (Web Traffic)
  • DNS & DHCP (Name Resolution and Address Acquisition)

The following will not function unless you are already logged into a VPN which allows this traffic:

  • SSH
  • FTP
  • RDP (Remote Desktop)
  • IMAP, MAPI, and SMTP (most desktop email clients) — we suggest Web-based email access if your organization or email provider offers it.
