Homepage content in Drupal

Posted May 21st, 2014 at 1:49 pm.

Note: The homepage content types are only available to Site Editors. If you have suggestions for homepage content, please contact College Communications.

Homepage

The homepage consists of the Carousel (populated by the Homepage Slide content type) and feature blocks below it, populated primarily by the External Link content type and the Alert content type. It’s possible to promote other content types into the feature block area, but they may not have ideal formatting.

Homepage Slide

homepage slide

Populates the homepage carousel. A maximum of 10 slides will be displayed on the homepage.

Adding

  • Content->Add Content->Home Page Slide

  • Complete required fields and upload an image (minimum resolution: 1200×556 pixels). Click Next and include alt text.

  • Save

Promoting:

  • Go to the Nodequeue tab (in the piece of content you want to edit)

  • Add to queue

Removing:

  • Go to the Nodequeue tab (in the piece of content you want to edit)

  • Remove from queue

Note: Slides that are not promoted to the queue will not be seen by the public. You can take advantage of this to save and reuse items. Single use items may be unpublished or deleted.

Managing the Nodequeue:

You may also manage the Nodequeue by going to Structure->Nodequeues->Home Page Slider.

Click “Remove” next to a slide to remove it from the queue. Save after each change.

Drag and drop slides to reorder. Save after making changes.

Type the administrative title of a slide in the “Add content” box to add new content. Save after each change.

Note: Not saving after each change you make to the queue may cause unpredictable results (such as a removed slide reappearing in the queue).

Alerts

 example alert about terrible weather

Used for displaying bad weather information and other emergency alerts in the featured content area of the homepage.

Adding

  • Go to Content->Add Content->Alert

  • Enter a Title (e.g. “Bad Weather Day”)

  • Enter body text. The first few sentences will appear in the alert box on the homepage; the rest will be visible when the user clicks the “read more” link.

  • Upload an image if desired.

  • Branding Category is set as “Alert” and should remain so to make the alert more distinctive.

Promoting

  • While editing your content, click the Nodequeue tab.

  • Under Operation, click “Add to Queue”

  • Your Alert will automatically appear in the first (leftmost) feature box position on the homepage with styles that distinguish it from the other featured content.

Notes about promoted items:

  • Alerts that are not promoted to the queue will not be seen by the public. You can take advantage of this to save and reuse text for commonly used alerts. Single use alerts may be unpublished or deleted.
  • The Alert will replace the External Link item in the leftmost position. You may wish to re-order queue items before adding an alert to retain this item. You may also add/remove items after adding your alert.

Removing

  • Go to Content and filter to type “Alert”

  • Click Edit for the current alert.

  • Go to the Nodequeue tab

  • Under “operation,” click “Remove from queue.”

Notes about removing items:

  • Once you remove an Alert, the queue will only have two items in it. Manually add a third item to refill the queue.

External Links

external link on homepage

Primarily used for adding external links (to articles on other websites, etc.) to the featured content area of the homepage.

Adding:

  • Go to Content->Add Content->External Link

  • Complete applicable fields.

  • Leave Branding Category blank. This is a change to make External Links and Articles on the homepage consistent. Now only Alerts will have a Branding Category.

Promoting:

  • Go to the Nodequeue tab (in the piece of content you want to edit)

  • Add to queue

Removing:

  • Go to the Nodequeue tab (in the piece of content you want to edit)

  • Remove from queue

Note: Links and other content that are not promoted to the queue will not be seen by the public. You can take advantage of this to save and reuse items, and/or to display them elsewhere on the site. Single use items may be unpublished or deleted.
